New changes show Drag Racing poised for next step.Top Fuel restrictions are in order in both the NHRA and IHRA for the upcoming seasons. Competitionplus.com reports that letters have gone out to top fuel drivers of both organizations citing safety issues and insurance claims as the prime motivators. Several explosions that injured fans and drivers occurred last season immediately creating rumors that the drag racing organizations would have to go the way of NASCAR and restrict speeds on their highest classes. The NHRA's immediate fix is to reduce the fuel mixture to a maximum of 90% Nitromethanol. IHRA is looking at a volume restriction by limiting fuel pumps to a max 55GPM @4000 rpm. Both organizations are also addressing the need to restrict breakage which may require lengthy cleanup times going so far as to levy hefty fines and punishments for those drivers who blow up an engine and create a big cleanup. In another announcement that goes hand in hand with the punishment for oil downs and lengthy cleanups, NHRA has announced that the 2000 season will have every major event finals aired live on either TNN or ESPN2. This is the first time that every major NHRA event will be aired live. Needless to say NHRA president Tom Compton is very pleased.
