Yet Another File Manager

2xExplorer
Program: 2x Explorer R7x Ver 1.3.1.8 - Size 556 KB Operating Systems: Win 95/98/ME/NT4/2000 License: Freeware Installation Type: Standalone Website: http://netez.com/2xExplorer/

Weighing in at only 556 KB, 2x Explorer R7x is real lightweight in it's class yet picks up where Windows Explorer leaves off. First, 2x Explorer divides into three vertical screens. The far left showing the root directory & drives. The far right pane shows the sub-directories of C:\ drive & finally the center screens contains information on the directory that you are viewing. A user can choose to view between one, two, or three panes at a time.

Filtering of information with the same extension couldn't be easier. I chose to filter all my jpgs in a directory simply by clicking on the directory of my choice then typing in .jpg after the star in the address bar. 2x Explorer will keep a history of these extensions under the Files tab then History. The same function is located under the Filters command listed under the Files tab. In fact, clicking the Filters command will bring the user back to the address bar. I personally found it surprising that the author did not include a popup window for this feature at this location. Surpringly, when the Filter function is accessed using the toolbar at the bottom of the screen a popup window will present itself.

Another quark I found was the Switch to the Current or Root Folder of Target Drive button located underneath the address bar does not bring the user back to the root directory. Instead I had to click on the Root button located to the right of the directory bar to access the root directory.

The author has presented yet another way to select files with the same extension by using the Select Group command located under the Mark tab. When clicked a popup screen will prompt the user to enter the extension of choice after the star. After execution, all the files with that extension in the directory will be selected. Also, under the Mark tab the Like This One command will also perform a similar function. Simply highlight a chosen file & click this command.

The Tools tab includes a Folder Data function feature that I found very helpful. Select a folder of your choice then click on Folder Data. The result is a popup window displaying stastistcal information on how many files are contained in each drive & the total space allocated.

A thumbnail bar is accessible via the toolbar at the bottom of the screen. The viewer will only show simple file types such as text files, jpg, gifs, bmps. I found that bitmap files were difficult to load unless they were under 1000 KB.
