Domestic Bliss or How Can I Achieve Happiness in My Household?

© Shellie Hurrle

Hello everyone! My first article appeared recently, but was written last fall. I would like to re-introduce my topic.

This column is dedicated to family: all the joys, rewards, fun, laughter, love, and even the headaches that make us appreciate the good times. I am thrilled to be a contributing editor for this very important topic.

So, who am I, anyway? Tough question-it changes daily as I grow and evolve, but I do try to make each day better than the last. I spend my time improving my writing career, enjoying my family life, and rediscovering life! I have learned that the most important roles in my life are wife, mother, sister, daughter, granddaughter, stepdaughter, stepsister (did I miss any steps?) and, of course, friend.

That is the purpose of this column-to explore ways of achieving overall happiness and balance with a focus on the home. Okay, I know what you're thinking. There is no such thing as complete household harmony. I agree...wouldn't that be boring?! (After a while, anyway.) The mission of this column is not to achieve perfection, only to recognize where we can improve our homes and discuss methods for doing it. It's more than just a place to learn newborn feeding tips, money saving strategies and vacation ideas; it's also a place to learn and share with each other.

This column is intended for everyone-from the single guy with a dog to the traditional married couple with 2.5 children. If you consider yourself a part of any family, I hope you'll join us. If your domestic life is already harmonious, perhaps you can learn some "maintenance" skills here and offer suggestions for future topics. Whatever your situation, I am certain there is always room for improvement. Even the person with everything-perfect home, exciting career, and wonderful family-may have forgotten something along the way: Self! I must emphasize that self-worth is absolutely essential to domestic harmony. I learned many frugal methods when times were lean. I know effective tips for dealing with children. I have found ways to rediscover yourself and/or your partner. We will cover everything from career goals to penny-pinching, from workouts to the terrible-twos. We will discuss money, pets, love, life, everything! The common elements in every article will be Home and Family.

My first article will share valuable ways to simplify your lives. As we enter a new millennium, we must find better ways to balance our time. For example, children's activities (sports, fundraising, and homework) coupled with our own (career, home, and love) can be overwhelming to say the least. If we find ways to streamline, the results will be amazing-reduced stress and more time for fun, health and happiness.
