Dolphins in Literature: Dolphins have been discussed, described, and depicted in literature for centuries. There is no other animal – mammal or otherwise – that has been so loved, cherished or written about then the dolphin. From Socrates, to Aristotle, and Greek mythology, dolphins and their beauty have been the subjects of books, poems, stories, folklore, and fairy tales since the Stone Age – yes, the Stone Age. There are cave drawings that contain numerous pictures resembling dolphins swimming in the oceans. These dolphins show man swimming with and on the backs of different members of a very large pod of dolphins. Included in other pictures are dolphins, whales and fish all swimming together with other “dolphin-whale” creatures, too. It is thought that several species of dolphins that were depicted in these cave drawings are no longer around and have become extinct. Even today, it is estimated that there are approximately 25,000 books, short stories and poems currently in circulation and publication related to dolphins, their life style, the different species, and their interaction with man.
