Dolphin Feature - The Risso DolphinThe Risso dolphin faces various threats from countries such as Peru and Japan. These countries do not have "whaling" laws that prohibit the hunting and killing of dolphin and whale species. This allows hunters and fishermen to hunt, catch and kill these dolphins to sell them on any market they wish. A pair of dolphins that beached themselves on a beach in Ireland were thought to be a hybrid of a Risso and a Bottlenose dolphin. Risso dolphins, unlike the Bottlenose species, do not thrive in captivity. However, while being held in a controlled environment for recovery from injuries, a female Risso dolphin did give birth to a hybrid Risso/Bottlenose infant. This unusual species has been confirmed by numerous sightings of Risso/Bottlenose dolphins in the wild. Are we witnessing to a new breed in the making? What will it be called, the botso dolphin? How about the Risnose? What do you think....
