A Wish for the New MillenniumOver the last thousand years we have discovered new diseases, new microorganisms, artifacts, and new species of wildlife. Where do we go from here? My wish for the new millennium is...improve and protect what we already have. We should protect the wildlife that we know and love, and do whatever it takes to ensure that the millions of species that exist will be around for the next thousand years. We should savor the life that we have, and the lives of all of the other species that we share this earth with.
Dolphins are just one of the species that we need to protect. Currently, there are 9 species of dolphins that are on the endangered species list. Will these wonderful creatures of the water be around for future generations to learn of and grow to love? Not unless we do something.
There are numerous organizations that have taken on the task of raising awareness of the danger these species are facing. These organizations, such as "Save the Whales," "Dolphin Protection Association," and "The Dolphin Society," have dedicated hours to ensuring that future generations will know these Angels of the Oceans as well as we do, or wish to. I am not usually one to take a subject and exploit it, but I feel that with the impending changes that will be taking place with the coming millennium this topic must be addressed, and discussed.
I have made one of my New Year's resolutions to learn and do all that I can to help in this cause. I want my grandchildren to be able to view a live Baiji, or Asian River dolphin, or even a Common dolphin if they wish to do so. It is important to me that all species of dolphins are given the chance to survive, and thrive, for years to come. Dolphins should be able to swim and feed in the waters of the world without becoming sick, dying or becoming endangered. This is my wish for the Millennium.
