Eleanor's Rescue - Page 4

A mass this size did not develop over night. The Vet and I figure what probably happened is Eleanor started to dribble, maybe wet in the house---and rather than taking her to the Vet to seek a solution, her owners threw her outside. The shelter had gotten her in terrible condition, dreadfully matted, and it would have taken at least a year—maybe two—for stones to grow this large.

How can this old girl be so sweet, she must be in so much pain? I’ve known people trying to pass a stone, smaller than a pea that screamed in pain. How can these monsters that allowed this to happen walk the planet with us?

So now, I've an old girl that is leaking bloody urine. Eleanor is now wearing toddler pull up training pants, with a hole cutout for her tail. (If we can just get the puppy to stop trying to drag her around by the britches.) Her surgery is scheduled for Thursday, July 5th. Eleanor's prognosis is excellent! She has a strong Heart, is a good weight, her HW antigen is low, and she is otherwise healthy. Surgery will consist of an abdominal incision, then incising her bladder. The stones will be removed, the inside of her bladder swabbed to determine exactly what bacteria is present, and the stones will have to be analyzed to know the cause. Eleanor will likely have to be on a special diet for the remainder of her years.

I cannot honestly say had I known all this when I was called that I would have taken her. There are just so many needing rescue, and without funding… I really don't know---but I made a promise to this girl, Eleanor. She was lying in that kennel, looking so sad. I coaxed her to the door, telling her everything would be OK. I told her I was there for her. She looked up at me, rubbed against the cage, and started to glow—and when she was in my arms, she just melted.

Eleanor's first vet visit was $69.74. Her second visit, complete with X-rays was $107.50. Her surgery is estimated at $504.16. Add HW treatment, and her costs go over $1000. I promised her a family that would cherish her. I promised. I cannot just turn my back on her now. The Vet says she will be fine afterwards. Eleanor could easily live at least 3, 5, maybe six years--- doesn’t she deserve to find love and care? A warm bed and a soft heart?
