How to groom a Terrier - Page 2© Chris Chamberlin Where a clipper would be used on a pet grooming is where the stripping is done an a terrier groomed to keep natural texture. Using a blade #7 clip down the length of the dog's back from the base of it's skull to the base of the tail. Clip the tail with a slightly longer blade #5 to give a tapered effect. Then using the breastbone, elbow, tuck-up and thigh as a visual guideline, clip in the direction the hair grows and blend to those lines. The exception is the Miniature Schnauzer whose clipping extends to the hock and inside thigh area. A one-inch fringe from the stifle joint is then scissored, as are the legs where clippers don't touch. The underbelly is neatly trimmed, starting at the elbow and extending slightly upward and back toward the tuck-up (last rib). Thinning scissors can be used to blend in side coat and chest coat using caution not to give a hollowed look to the forechest. For the head of the Schnauzer--A #10 blade is used to trim the ears and top and sides of the skull. The brows are combed forward toward the nose and a straight scissor, lined up with the corner of the outside edge of the eye and the center of nose is then used to cut straight at the diagonal placement. Clean out between the eyes in line again with the center of the nose to create two visors over the eyes that look like an inverted "V". Remove any straggly hairs from the beard that is combed forward. It should have a rectangular look to it. The biggest help is to use a picture of the terrier as a guide to the breed you are looking to have your dog resemble. Go To Page: 1 2
