Reasons to Own a Doberman, Part 2

As the second installment in the series on Reasons to Own a Doberman, here are a few more reasons and the pros and cons behind them.

TOUGH GUY Dobermans have a reputation for being a tough dog. By nature, they truly are fearless of threats. Because of this reputation, few people will want to start trouble with your trusty Doberman at your side.

Dobermans are marshmallows inside. They can be “trained” to be fearful of ordinary objects or situations. This happens when trainers (owners) allow the dog to get the wrong association when he is young. Training isn’t just a special time you set aside to teach Thor to sit; training takes place all the time, because these dogs are always learning. For example, if the puppy is reprimanded and then the owner immediately turns on the vacuum cleaner, the dog can associate cleaning with scolding and shun the appliance.

To prevent these misunderstandings, make sure that you don’t do new things when the puppy is being scolded. Expose young dogs to all kinds of events and circumstances so that he won’t be as likely to jump to conclusions.

SMARTY PANTS Dobermans are very smart dogs. It may seem like fun to be able to impress your friends with a repertoire of dog tricks; however, there’s a lot of responsibility to owning a smart dog.

Smart dogs get bored if they don’t receive enough stimulation. Dobermans are no exception. When the get bored, they’ll find something interesting to do, like see what the stuffing of your sofa pillows looks like, or find out how long it takes to chew the leg off the kitchen table. Dobermans can figure out how things work, which can lead to further mischief. With their agile paws and slender noses, they have the ability to do things like open the refrigerator or nudge open the cupboard where the biscuits are kept.

Dobermans are quick learners and eager to please you. Take time every day to work on their old “tricks” and incorporate new ones from time to time. Take them walking in new places and try new things, such as clambering on your local playground’s equipment. (Most Dobes climb stairs and ladders just fine; however, getting them down the slides is more difficult!) Take different walking routes for variety.

Bring your Doberman along to dog-friendly events so she gets a “noseful” of new scents to enjoy. Many warehouse-style hardware, feed/pet stores, and even a few restaurants with patios will allow dogs. The best bet is to call ahead to make sure, and bring bags with you for a quick potty break before entering.
