TOMATO FACTS:
The tomato is the world's most popular fruit.
Tomatoes are native to America and were first cultivated in 700 A.D. However, the fear of tomatoes being poisonous persisted until about 1812 when the Creoles in New Orleans used tomatoes in gumbos and jambalayas.
By 1850 the tomato gained popularity throughout all America.
Tomatoes have a natural ripening hormone called ethylene. This is the same kind of ripening hormone found in apples.
Cooked tomatoes have higher concentrations of lycopene (the important carotenoid that appears to be effective in preventing certain cancers) than non-cooked and may be even more beneficial to reducing the risk of cancer.
Botanically, tomatoes are a fruit. This is because, generally, a fruit is the edible part of the plant that contains the seeds, while a vegetable is the edible stems, leaves, and roots of the plant.
Forty percent of Americans who raise their own tomatoes do it for taste, not health.
