Comments to avoid

Sometimes it is very natural to make derogatory comments about your ex-spouse to your child. However, many of those "natural" thoughts and comments could cause a bunch of damage to the relationship between child and parent. Part of the grant of custody in most situations weighs which parent could promote and provide a loving relationship with the other parent. Here is a list of comments that should be kept out of the ears of children despite the accuracy of the comment. Just remember that little ears are listening:

1. You father, he is lazy bum, who doesn't ever work 2. Your mother does not care about you (the kids) that is why she left. 3. personal comments about him/her - he is a lazy bum, she is a liar, he is a cheat. 4. Children don't need to know that so and so was seeing someone else before they were divorced. 5. Comments about a current boy/girl friend 6. Dad does not love you, otherwise he would be here, Mom does not love you, that is why she won't come to your play, game, etc. 7. He is a drunk, or druggie. If it is true, then the children need to know there is a problem, but they don't have to think less about their parent because of that - they can say that mom has a problem, that is why you can't see him as much as you would like. 8. The divorce is all his/her fault for whatever reason, kids don't need to know that, nor should they be placed in such a position as to have to choose sides 9. He/she stole something from me (if the judgment calls for division of something, for instance, and it is something both wanted) 10. The number or details of infidelities during the marriage. 11. Your Mom threw me out in the street. 12. Comments on physical appearance, he is ugly, dirty, bum. 13. Your mother is robbing me blind making me pay child support.
