There are many services for those needing help. These services are for more than just the divorced parent but many times divorced parent needs services more than the average person. Each state is different and have many other services than those I have listed. Check local agencies and even the blue pages (government pages) for other similar agencies than those in this list. Some agencies perform the same services but the name changes from state to state. Many states publish a "Where to turn" book that lists services by category. Use this as just a guide but try and get help. You don't need to be on welfare to need to help.
United Way - (http://www.unitedway.org) National organization that provides disaster relief, aid to families and many other services. Contact your local chapter for more information or call 800-411-UWAY (8929). March of dimes - (http://www.modimes.org) National organization that provides information and programs to help reduce birth defects, provides assistance with families with disabilities and birth defects. Legal Aid - provides legal services to low income families in many areas including marriage and family services. Safety Council - The safety council provides safety information for car and other safety. Can purchase car seats at reduced rates from here as well as get training and other information on safety. Social Security Administration /Medicaid - (http://www.ssa.gov) Federal program that provides financial support for children with disabilities and other qualifying medical problems. Medicaid provides medical services for those that qualify for SSI. Call 800-772-1213. Aid to Dependent Families provides financial assistance to families needing aid. Must have minor children to qualify. The National Red Cross (http://www.redcross.org) - provides emergency assistance programs, health and safety programs, medical assistance and programs, and disaster relief. Their website gives a location search engine or look in your local phone book to contact their nearest chapter. LaLache League (www.lalachelegue.org) - provides breastfeeding resources for families. Contact their web site for local chapter information and specific services. Local churches and Fire Station - can provide shelter or other informational programs. Can also give assistance in finding services in the area. Battered Women's shelters - Provides assistance and shelters to women and family of abusive situations. Social services/ HHS (Health and Human Services)/HRS (Health and Rehabilitative Services or also called Children and family services) - Provides social services to needy families including financial support, shelter, and medical assistance. Local Hospitals - Many local hospitals have training programs to help a parent be safety trained ie. CPR certification classes, child care how-to classes.
