Internet Safety

Internet safety is a concern which has only grown with the size of the medium, and the Suite is dedicated to helping make you and your family as safe as possible. With stories of Internet scams getting prime time coverage in the media, it's little wonder so many people are interested in protecting themselves. Yet, while there's no shortage of sites wanting you to purchase goods over questionably secure connections and free previews of pornography to entice subscriptions, it takes a bit more searching to find sources of information about how to protect yourself.

Well, today's your lucky day. Point your browser to U.S Dept of Education, Office of Educational Technology for a variety of links to help make you and your family safer on the Internet. The US Department of Education's Office of Educational Technology (OET) offers a parent-centric perspective on cybersafety. Whatever you may think of the President's own moral code, read about his initiatives under the Communications Decency Act. Also, look for the link to Net Parents to find out which ISPs offer free or low-cost software applications to help you block offensive materials from your computer.

Another link provided on the OET's site is America Links Up This site offers practical tips and advice for parents to use in talking with kids about staying safe on the Internet. Some of the advice may sound a little too obvious, but it's no less important than talking to kids about your feelings on guns or drugs. Technology is not a "silver bullet", as Mr. Morality himself, William Jefferson Clinton, has said. However, it's everyone's job to make it as near to harmless as possible.
