Doubletake Magazine

Lately, I've been looking for education resources that span the worlds of print and online media. In this wave of technology we're calling the 21st century, I still believe in the power of the printed word. Don't agree? Try going a week without using the print function on your computer. Maybe that's an easy proposition for you, but it's not for me.

I know there are a lot of online versions of print materials used in education, but they mostly just take their content and copy it again online, which doesn't utilize the full benefits of new media. One exception I've found to this is the online classroom companion to Doubletake Magazine.

The magazine is an award-winning quarterly, showcasing essays, fiction, poetry and photography. The classroom companion is only found online; an idea truly dedicated to the vision of distance education. The editors see the project as a means for "inspiring students to notice the details of their lives, to remember, to imagine, and to learn." The companion is divided into two categories: a subject index and a classroom activity manual. Themes in the subject index are divided into "curriculum-friendly themes," ranging from issues of race and poverty to the question: "What's beauty?". Each index is linked to a collection of works from each narrative form. The classroom activity manual offers lesson plans that supplement themes from the subject index. The full text of each article, essay and poem is also linked to the classroom activity manual.

Still don't believe me that this is an excellent resource? Let me guess, you want to see something in print first? Well, you're in luck. A free trial copy of the magazine is available to educators. The catch; you have to go online to sign up. http://www.doubletakemagazine.org/teache...
