Poetry and Art: The DBAE Way

© Colleen Madonna Williams.

Use a masterpiece to spark not only your students' visual arts muses, but their writing muses as well. Follow this simple generic five step procedure and you'll be on your way to creating great learning activities.

1.History- Choose a master art work. Discuss the history of the artist and the work with your class.

2.Aesthetics- Lead your class in an aesthetic scanning of the art work.

3.Principals/Elements- Discuss specific principals or elements of art that you want your students to incorporate into their visual art work.

4.Production- Have your students create an art work.

5. Poetry- Read several poems to your class that relate in some way to the masterpiece that you shared with them. Now, ask your students to write a poem that relates to their own work.

Share the finished products with each other and enjoy!

Great ideas! This is good advice for those bringing the arts to children.

Take care!
