How to deal with misinformation on disabilityemployment in the private sector? Isn't government supposed to serve the best interest of the people? How is allowing any group to possibly become disabled in the best interest of the people? These are two instances which I have had to refute but there many others which you will find that you must refute. For example, two popular faulty assumptions in my country that need to be addressed are 1) welfare and disability are the same and 2)the disabled don't want to work. If you want to refute the first assumption, then you must enlighten the public to the differences between disability and welfare. A major difference may be that the welfare recipient may not be regarded as a liability by employers wheras the disabled may. Point out how liability may be the biggest hurtle for the disabled to overcome. Point out that liability may be the major cause for our high unemployment. Another faulty assumption,of my country is the disabled don't want to work. If you live in my country you can point to liability as well as Title V of the American's With Disabilities Act. If you don't live in my country you may still be able to counter this faulty assumption by pointing to liability. Either way you can ask the proponents of this faulty assumption one question."How can one be a risk prior to employment and expect to gain employment?" Finally, you can point out that the disabled want a helping hand not a hand out. We desire employment based on our abilities not employment based upon our disability.
