UNITED WE STAND DIVIDED WE FAILWe in America's Disabled community should be asking ourselves what went wrong with our civil Rights law? We should ask ourselves why our employment status appears to have remained the same? We should ask ourselves why this unfortunate situation remains even with ADA? Prior to ADA our unemployment rate of the hovered around 70 to 75%. Twelve years later this atrocious unemployment rate still appears to be at this level. So ADA has not changed this even thought it was supposed to. If we look deeply then we may find the underlying reason may be two fold. First, it appears that all government's, National, state and local may be neglecting our Civil Rights law. Secondly we may find that our community has forgotten an underlying Principle that we learned in Geometry-The whole is larger than the sum of its parts or UNITED WE STAND DIVIDED WE FAIL. ADA was supposed to help us disabled regain fundamental rights that may have lost because of our disability. It was supposed to help those capable of full time employment become employed without having to first overcome man made barriers to employment.. Unfortunately ADA only appears to maintain the status quo because of Title V. This Title states that the insurance industry could continue to write a person up as a risk for Private insurance. Who but the disabled will be considered to be insurance risks prior to employment? What employer will knowingly hire a person whom they consider to be a risk (either real or presumed)? It appears that the government which claimed to help us in fact hurt us be allowing us to be considered risks simply because we had controlled disorders or cured diseases. It further appears that this possibly intentional oversight may be the direct cause for the attacks upon ADA which was declared by many countries as a truly progressive approach to checking the now unchecked rise of disability. The atmosphere of indifference being displayed by my countries present administration needs to change if our government expects to see significant decrease in the amount of people on government assistance. The present administration should see the benefit in insuring that all capable disabled become employed without first having to overcome man-made barriers to employment. Should this happen then my country could expect additional taxable revenue to exceed Three Hundred Billioneach year. If other countries were to do what my country is supposed to do for the disabled then think how much more money could be pumped back into the world economy. Think how much more solvent the economies of these nations could become should they also place checks upon the now unchecked Worldwide rise of disability.
