An Encounter With The Intolerant

At this point I will tell you about my encounter with a proponent of Intolerance. Remember that I am supposed to live in a progressive country.

AN ENCOUNTER WITH THE INTOLERANT

My encounter with intolerance began in a shoping mall, and was reminiscent of a dark period in world history when attitudes like those whih I am about to describe were rampant. On this fateful day I had taken my daughter to the mall so her grandmother could buy her a birthday present. Little did I know that I would find myself being attacked because I was disabled.

The day started out normal, but its complexion changed and I found myself being attacked as a leech on society. The attack began while I was waiting for my daughter to come out of the ladies dressing room. During the wait I had been approached by a gentleman who was also waiting for his wife. A conversation developed and I learned that he was self-employed. The tone of the conversation changed when I was asked what I did for a living. I told him that I was disabled. Upon hearing this he proceeded to attack me as being a leech on society. This proponent of intolerance closed his ears to what I was trying to do, namely to get something done to enable the disabled to become productive. He, and others like him, must believe that the disabled want to depend on government, or that disability and welfare are the same. I guess he must also believe that our country would be better off if the disabled ceased to exist. Isn't this the same type of thinking which caused many to be eradicated during WW II?

My encounter withiIntolerance took place in a progressive country. How much worse is it for the disabled of other countries? How much worse will it get if we don't speak out for ourselves? If intolerance is allowed to fester are we destined to see history repeat itself? Are we to see another holocaust worse than that of WW II?
