Before truely starting my article, let me describe my disability to any new reader who as
yet hasn't been to my homepage or to my links section in Suite 101. I belong to a group
of people known as the walking wounded. We are called this because many times
our disability isn't observable, measurable. quantitative, or visible. These
are the guidelines used by most agencies to determine/define disability. If you haven't guessed I am a survivor of Traumatic Brain Injury.
Besides these four their should be a fifth classification. It should be called risk. It appears that risk, unlike the other four, may be almost impossible to overcome because of employers fears of hiring risks. Remove this fear by creating a new classification and you will most probably find that emloyers will be more receptive to hiring the disabled. Remove the risk category from employment and governments could find that the unemployment of the disabled would plumit. Such a classification would enable the employer to look upon the disabled as assets not liabilities to the workplace. As assets they have a greater chance of employyment. Such a classification should have a waiting period before the individual is placed into it. Once placed that individual could not be considered to be a risk so far as employment. It should be called a medically controlled/medically cured disease classification. If all countries would create such a classification, they might find that they could substantially reduce the number of people now dependent upon government assistance because of disability. If all countries would do this then they might find that they are paying less to maintain people at government expense, because they have finally done something positive, progressive, to create revenue producers out of those who are now or will become revenue users. If my country would do this then they could possible reduce the unemployment rate of the disabled from 70% to 6%. Such a reduction could pump in excess of three hundred billion back into our economy by transforming the disabled from revenue users back into revenue producers. As producers they will pump money back into the economy. Leave them revenue users by refusing to change the status quo and you will insure that their numbers will continue to climb unchecked. In my country, I thought that the disabled would be helped because of enlightened leaders who passed a law which was supposed to help transform many into revenue producers instead of leaving them revenue users infinitum. Then recently they passed another law which would further help the disabled by allowing them to buy into a government insurance program and use it as their primary insurer if they appeared to be Go To Page: 1 2
