Artificial barriers to employment must come down

There are three things that can happen to anyone during their life span; they are the following: A. Your Birth B. Your Death C. You My become disabled

The first two happen without your input, but the last may be made better or worse by your own input as well as your attitude.

If you become disabled you my find that public transportation is the pits, therefore you have an option. You either can sit home and complain and nothing happens or you become socially active and work for change that will benefit all people, the disabled as well as the non-disabled.

If you become socially active you must seek to have all artificial barriers to employment removed. You must therefore begin to enlighten leaders to the existence of these barriers.

A major barrier that could be removed now is inaccessibility to public transportation. If enlightened leaders were to remove just this one barrier then they might find that they have done something positive to help the disabled population as well as their non-disabled constituents. They might find that by removing just this one barrier to employment that they have made it possible for many disabled to return to work.

However if leaders, national and local alike, continue to allow public transportation to remainthen thessible thenthe disabled population will continue to expand needlessly. Unchecked growth will mean that the non-disabled population will have to spend more and more money just to help the disabled.

Making public transportation accessible could prevent this; why haven't our leaders taken affirmative measures to make public transportation truly accessible? Shouldn't government primary objective be to help people return to productivity? Not to allow some to become wards of the State. Isn't inaccessibility to public transportation just a way to allow people to become wards of the State?

There is an old saying. "Employment is the best form of rehabilitation. " If this is so then why not get the disabled employed instead of spending money to rehabilitate them to disability or dependence upon government aid? Why not take a baby step and make all forms of public transportation accessible?
