Grant That I May Not Criticise My Neighbor Until I Have Walked A Mile in His Moccosins.

There is an Indian Prayer which all disabled people could learn a lesson from. THAT Prayer is this:

Grant That I May Not Criticize My Neighbor Until I Have walked a Mile in His Moccasins.

I am very late this month in submitting my writing but it occurred to me that the reason for this seemingly oversight may that I am living this Prayer and am truly beginning to see the artificial barriers which those in wheel chairs have to overcome each day.

My odyssey into this Indian Prayer began in August of this Year. Prior to this date I had not really experienced the problems that many physically challenged have to overcome each and every day.

On the 16 of August, I slipped while descending from my porch. My slipping resulted in my breaking both the tibia and the fibula of my left leg and shattering one of them. I had to have surgery to repair the damage and was told that I could not put any weight on my foot for at least THREE months. Surgery reveled that I most probably had the beginnings of osteoporosis a condition that will most likely slow down the healing process.

Since the 18 of August, the day of my operation, I have had to rely upon a wheel chair and a walker just to walk. Besides this I have had to rely upon others to take me places that I was once able to go to by myself because I cannot drive.

Being in a chair has shown me the many problems that the wheelchair bound hare to face each day. Manipulate around a store can be almost impossible because clerks place the isles too close for a chair to move easily about. And the simple act of bathing, without the use of both legs takes on a new meaning, and the simple act of dressing oneself can be near impossible to accomplish on your own.

I now know what it means to walk a mile in your neighbors Moccasins, and I hope that this experience will make me a better advocate for the disabled
