Educating the Public is the key to dispelling all underlying myths surrounding disability.
As a disabled person your first priority should be to attack all misinformation surrounding disability. If you don't rebut it, then you may find that a misled public may continue to falsely accuse you of not really wanting to become employed. Therefore read your newspapers and magazines and watch your television diligently for it may be here where all faulty information originates. Whenever you spot misinformation regarding disability be Johnny on the spot and immediately refute the misleading information. Only when all of us do this will we are able to educate a misinformed public on the realities of disabilities. As an advocate for the disabled I do this on a regular basis. My first attempt came when I read an article whose underlying premise was that the disabled want to be disabled and on government assistance or that disability is nothing more than welfare. When I saw this faulty information, I wrote a letter to its author. I pointed out the true realities of disability and asked how it was possible for 70% of the disabled, in my country, to be so disabled that they couldn't perform something useful. If you want to refute this type faulty then you must enlighten the public to the differences between disability and welfare. A major difference may be that the welfare recipient may not be regarded as a liability by employer whereas the disabled may. Points out how liability may be the single greatest hurtle for the disabled to overcome. Ask the question how can a person be left a liability and then expect to become employed Go To Page: 1
