Flushing the January Blues Away

After all the hustle and bustle of the Holiday Season it’s extremely easy to allow yourself to fall into what I’d term the January Blues. For weeks your schedule has been packed to the rafters with activities and commitments that have kept you quite busy. Then suddenly it feels like your social calendar has taken a nosedive into obscurity. You’re “to do” list has gone from too many items to accomplish in a 24-hour period to feeding the cat and watering the plants. Combine this with the eventuality that the most miserable weather usually occurs in the month of January and its no wonder many of us face an emotional and physical letdown during the first month of the year.

When the bleak, blustery days of January hit its time to sit down, take stock and learn what you as a person needs to nurture yourself during this difficult time. Some people use those wonderful gift certificates they received during the holiday season to pamper themselves with services they normally don’t enjoy such as spa treatments or massage therapy sessions. Others use this time to explore new commitments that they have “resolved” to attempt such as new eating habits or quitting smoking.

Since January can be what most people consider a “downtime” period. Maybe you’d enjoy exploring what you can do to make it an “uptime” period. Spend some time researching future travel destinations. Go to the library or surf the internet exploring your favorite possibilities for travel. Do the legwork now so that when you have the time and finances to book this dream trip you’ll have all the information on that exotic locale ready and waiting for that perfect travel deal.

Maybe you have future renovations in mind for your home? There are so many home decorating/renovation sites online you could keep busy for some time just browsing the possibilities. Maybe you can explore how the effects of certain colours can have on your mood and temperament. Or you could look into the mystical decorating world of Feng Shui and recover some of your lost “Ch’I”. At this time of year if you find after you’ve done your legwork, and if you still have cash left over from the holiday season it’s much easier to get tradesmen into your home quickly.

So now is the time to pick something that will hold your interest and provide you with a sense of enthusiasm for the coming year. Possibly my suggestions don’t turn your crank but I suspect if you gave it a little thought you’d find something to put a smile on your face and a happy moment in your mind.
