Medic Alert !

© Michelle Struik

While in the drugstore the other day filling yet another prescription I happened to glance upon a display for the Medic Alert Organization. Now I suspect that many of you are just like me. You realize that you probably should sign up for this vital medical resource but just never seemed to get around to it. As I was reading the pamphlet I was surprised to see how many items I should be disclosing in the case of a possible medical emergency. Then I thought of the scenario that there might be some day where I could end up in some Emergency Department and not be in the position to share this information personally.

Those of us with chronic medical conditions or disabilities tend to be on at least one medication that in an emergency situation mixed with emergency medications could cause possible drug interactions. Or maybe you have a situation where you are admitted unconscious to the Emergency Department and require testing such as an MRI. What if you have a steel pin or plate located somewhere in your body and you are unable to convey this information to the emergency medical personnel.

There are many reasons to obtain a Medic Alert bracelet or necklace. The information that this organization complies on each Member could have a significant difference in the care you could receive when you are most vulnerable. The application requests information such as the names and phone numbers of doctor’s responsible for your care. You can also list two emergency contacts, and emergency personal can gain important access to your regular medication regime.

Basic medical details are engraved on the reverse side of the Medic Alert plaque. Also engraved is your member number and a toll free 24 hour hotline that medical personal can phone for further details. All emergency personnel are trained to look for Medic Alert jewelry.

So if you’re anything like me, I guess it’s time to stop procrastinating and add one more valuable medical talent to your growing resource team. After all you never know when you might need Medic Alert and you don’t want to find out you really needed it the hard way!

Good article.
