Disability Aids : Turning Mountains into Molehills!

© Michelle Struik

Have you ever wondered who invented the saying "Making a mountain out of a molehill"? Whoever it was, I think they must have had the disabled in mind. Sometimes it's the little things that can make the big differences in our lives. Simple things that the abled community take for granted, like peeling a potato for that beef stew, or signing a cheque, stirring a pot or even using a bathroom! Some of these daily functions can be quite difficult for a disabled person, or become more difficult to accomplish as a disability takes over more control of our lives as it progress'.

If you live in an urban city you'll probably find stores devoted to "disability aids" but what if you already have difficult getting out, or live in some isolated town where their idea of a "disability aid" is an oversized hulk of a man by the name of Igor who comes once a week to help you take a bath? If this is the case then have I got a treat for you :) Recently while surfing the net my browser stumbled upon an excellent little company in Phoenix, Arizona by the name of Independent Living Products . They have a comprehensive online catalog of products that any disabled person would be happy to have in their home. Their motto "Turn Can't Into Can!" really hits home. Their easy to browse site with excellent photos of the products covering the six essentials of daily living: Bathing, Dressing, Eating, Using the Toilet, Walking and Transferring into or out of a bed or chair. They even have devices to help with Recreation, Low Vision and Hobbies.

They even have one area on their site devoted to "disabled aid" gift giving with suggestions for specific disabilities so if you have a birthday coming up start leaving this URL lying around the house in conspicuous places! That special someone could stock up here buying several items without breaking the bank! Yet another plus to this site is their 800 service which allows you to speak to them prior to purchase to ask questions of specific devices. If you can't find what you're looking for then give them a call, not all of their products are displayed in their online catalog. If they don't carry it, they will attempt to find it for you.

Now I know not everyone out there can get excited over elevated toilet seats or medicine boxes with alarms on them, but maybe those extra large hand gripped gardening tools will give you a thrill!
