Firetalk for Fireside Chats

© Michelle Struik

Have you ever connected with another patient who shares the same medical condition as yourself and they live half the world away? I suspect you'd love to chat with them "live", but the cost of the phone call would put a considerable dent into the monthly budget?

Well.... now you can. Firetalk.com is an internet telephony software with a twist. Not only can you use this free software to chat one on one with another internet user but you can even set up a room where multiple users can chat the night away "live voice". Allowing you the opportunity to even set up an online support group if you so choose. The sound quality of Firetalk is comparable with your regular telephone company minus the long distance charges.

You require a computer with a sound card and microphone, a small download, a couple of minutes to set your microphone and speaker volumes and then you are off and chatting up a storm. I highly recommend that if you find the software to your liking that you invest in a headset microphone for talking ease. Another feature of Firetalk is that this software can be operated behind a personal firewall, which is an excellent safety feature of the software.

Firetalk has other features similar to ICQ where you can add your friends to a participant list so you'll be notified when they have their Firetalk software operating so you can connect when you are both online. Also you will have the ability to leave live voice mail for your friends that will remain on the server until they collect it the next time they log on. Firetalk also has the same instant messaging features that ICQ or AOL's Instant Messenger allow for, helping you to keep track of your online support buddies.

Can't find any of your friends online? Check out the Physically Challenged Forum, you never know, you just might make some new online friends.

You don't have to be a member of Suite101 for this service.

Jerri I have found Firetalk an excellent piece of software to grab. I have several friends with the same medical condition in very long distance locations and this sure helped our phone bill! :) ...
