Guide to Safe Surfing (of Medical Sites)

© Michelle Struik

Safe surfing of medical sites is becoming more and more of a challenge due to the amount of snake oil peddlers plying their trade all over the Web. It's easy to get sidetracked developing your education on your disability. So, what do you look out for? Here are some basics to help you avoid being taken for a ride.

1. Any site that attempts to sell you something: Move on and don't waste your time! They have a hidden agenda working here — they want to make money off your illness! Usually these sites are full of "testimonials" but testimonials are NOT double blind studies! If you do decide to invest in one of these "products" then do speak to your doctor about it before using it!

2. Any site that blames faulty and/or lack of nutrition: Although some illnesses are caused by lack of nutrition, your doctor can give you better advice about it on a more personal level than any web site could. Also, he/she could refer you to a nutritionist that can work with you!

3. The Conspiracy Theories: these sites blame the medical profession, drug manufactures and government for withholding information to the people "suffering" from whatever their web site is about.

4. Sites with uncheckable references: they say articles have been written in the New York Times about their product but don't give a link to the article itself! Or they have quotes from doctors who are unknown in the field of expertise!

5. Page after page about the costs programs: guess they were more interested in the money aspect than actually giving you facts about their product! If it has a pyramid shape to it, you KNOW it's snake oil!

6. The use of the word "CURE" when you know one doesn't exist: one of the best reasons to educate yourself about your medical condition! If you know there is no "cure" then why don't they?

7. They give a "medical cause" for a medical condition when it's unknown: yet another reason to be educated about your medical condition. If you have an illness where they haven't discovered the cause yet, and then run into a site that knows the "cause" they are definitely not on the up and up!

8. Sites with lots of CAPITALS and PUNCTUATION!!!!!!!!: since both the usage of capitals and punctuation are considered yelling on the Internet not only are they being rude by yelling but they think that by yelling the point is going to make it more believable. If only it was that simple.
