From the Mailbag!

Using the description of "Disabilities" for this page encompasses such a diverse area I have found it difficult to cover even a small percentage of what's available on the net! So I've decided that occasionally I'm going to dive into the old mailbag and share some of the gems that have arrived from cyberspace with you.

This time out I've decided to introduce a couple of disabled children's websites with you. A disabled child's life has it's own set of challenges to overcome!

The first site I'd like to help you discover is the Deaf Native American Children website. This wonderful site was brought to my attention by it's webmistress Ruthe. She's obviously taken alot of trouble developing it with interesting native graphics and easy to navigate layout.. She invites us to explore the Culture and Traditions of the South Dakota and Lakota people. Then she continues the journey by sharing with us the world of the Deaf. She lists several online Deaf Resources and this page would make a great jumping off point for exploring what's available on the net. sheCHEHcha is the "kids" area for those of you with deaf children where you can let them explore with the guidance of Anna, this sites 13 year old "roving" reporter. Starting this fall Anna will be joined by 3 additional young "reporters" living in Toulouse, France. This site is an exciting place to discover and I think even those of you in the hearing world would find it a fun place to explore.

The second site I'd heard about some time ago, and bookmarked it because I thought it was a site to watch with interest. YPWCnet is a site developed for children and youth with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). This is a huge site that even children and parents with other chronic illness' could benefit from. This site has a newsletter, information and resource links, an area just for parents, a home schooling page, an area where the children can express themselves creatively, a bulletin board, a "People Page" where you can get acquainted with the regulars and an Activity Centre. What more could you ask for? :) One stop surfing! Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is so much more than just being "tired"! YPWCnet will provide the information that parents need for their children and at the same time provide a place for their children to visit with others with CFS so they feel less isolated. YPWCnet will also help children with CFS learn to understand their illness and learn the coping skills they need to develop.
