Fall Tune Up Time!Have you noticed a certain crispness to the air? When did all those leaves fall? They were certainly on the tree just a few days ago! When did that cutting north wind appear? Seems like only yesterday the kids were just starting school, where did the time go? It's time to start thinking of "winterizing"! After all we certainly don't need to have unexpected surprises while handling our day to day living do we? Now is the time to check over our homes, cars, mobility aids and stock up the pantry with basics! Then we can settle in for our annual winter hibernation period. Our Homes Give your house a once over, checking for any possible problem areas. If you live in an area that receives a lot of snow and ice, stock up now with sand and salt for your stairs and walkways, then you'll know you'll have it available for that big snow storm! Line up someone now to shovel your walks and driveways so you can get out if you need to! If you wait until the first Christmas card scene dumps 10 inches on your front yard you might not be able to find someone. Our Cars Take your car into the shop, get it checked over. How's your battery? Your tires? Are they in good shape? Do you really want to find out they are in less than great shape on some back road or in the middle of the busiest intersection in your city? Changing your tire in the middle of what might seem like a Monsoon rainstorm or the biggest snowstorm of the century is not what you want to experience! You can avoid these pitfalls by being prepared! I know it can be expensive but it's cheaper to spend the money now because later you might have added a towing charge on top of that new battery! Mobility Aids How well would you do with your cane if the sidewalk were covered with ice? Can you hum a few bars of "Slip, Sliding Away"? You can usually pick up a retractable ice pick extension for canes, and crutches. Check your wheelchairs and scooters over carefully. Are the tires in good shape? Do they need to be replaced? Are the braking systems in good order? Or are you one of those daredevil types that enjoy pulling "donuts" in the parking lot at the local Safeway store? You still can be a "wild rider", just make sure you don't blow a tire in the process.
