HealthCare Reality Check

In past columns I have encouraged you my readers to be skeptical of alternative and complementary medicine. This has been for good reason! For the most part these medicines are unregulated and make copious unsubstantiated claims as to their effectiveness treating numerous medical conditions. We as pro-active medical consumers have to be wary of the "snake oil peddlers". Most of us don't have the luxury of unlimited financial funding and must make sure we get the most bang for our medical cost bucks.

Recently while doing some power surfing around the net I stumbled upon and excellent medical consumer advocacy site called the HealthCare Reality Check Online . The objective of this particular site is to provide the medical consumer with the tools to verify the scientific information behind the claims made by Alternative and Complementary Medicine. The doctors behind this site take the legwork out of your power searches to find the true facts behind those products you find in health food stores, or from alternative medical practitioners attempting to sell you the latest fad/therapy in medical "science".

From Noni Juice, to Kava Kava, from Accupuncture to Chelation Therapy you'll find the facts at this site, or they will point you into the right direction to find the facts! Once you have both sides of the information, then you are in a position to make an informed medical decision regarding your personal health care. Remember to involve your regular medical professionals in any decisions you make. It is important that you involve all parties since conventional, alternative and complementary medicine and the mixing of all three disciplines can have serious repercussions. Mixing some health food store products with prescription medications can have life threatening consequences. Therefore all your health professionals need to be in the same "loop". Think of them as your "Resource Team" and you're the Team Captain.

It is extremely important for you to verify medical claims made by alternative and complementary medicine. It's not just the loss of finances that is at stake! Anyone can hang up a virtual medical shingle on a website making outrangeous medical claims and someone will buy what they have to offer. Unfortunately some people can be seriously harmed in the process. Until governments around the world provide more regulation in these areas of medicine we will all have to be cautious medical consumers.
