New Year's Wishes for Summer Renovation DreamsFor several years my hubby has been griping at me to allow him to do renovations around our home to make our home more accessible for me. Just little things, such as grab bars in the shower, pull out drawers in our kitchen cabinets, that sort of things. Of course these little extras would make my life alot easier, maybe it's the small part of me that doesn't wish to recognize the fact that my limitations do get in the way. Stubbornness on my part doesn't want to give in to these quirks, but I have to admit they are beginning to sound better and better. My biggest concern is the expense, since we are living on only one income and the cost of living in our hometown is extremely expensive I have a hard time justifying the costs of these changes. After all they do tend to reinforce the cost of my disability to our household. On the other hand, these renovations could also increase the resale value of our home, after all other's are disabled and/or elderly and new owners might view these changes to our home as asset's? So with these thoughts in mind I went searching on the net for possible ways to finance our renovation dreams to see what is available regarding financing and possible solutions. My first stop was at the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation Website. The Residential Rehabilitation Assistance Program (RRAP) seems like it might be helpful with regards to the financing portion of our project. This program "provides assistance to low income homeowners to bring their properties up to minimum health and safety levels". They also provide loans and grants to provide low income homeowners the ability to renovate their homes in cases of disability. Depending on your location in Canada they can provide you with financing from $18,000 to $27,000 for disability related renovations. This is certainly worth exploring soon if you feel you will be having the renovation "bug" sometime during the next year. I'm sure that there will be many forms you'll have to fill out for this program and no doubt some time waiting for approval. So now is the time to explore this financing option if you are thinking of renovating next spring or summer. Secondly I visited the KraftMaid Cabinetry - Passport Website . Anyone with a disability and a love of kitchen's will really enjoy this site! This line of kitchen cabinetry is specifically designed with the disabled in mind. Maybe you need lower counters with higher toekicks to accommodate a wheelchair? Or pull out drawers in cupboard's which can have in-cupboard lighting? Whatever your dream, I'd lay bet's this line of Kitchen Cabinet's will deliver them. Don't forget, you can use the same cabinetry in the bathroom!
