Flash in the Plan - How to use and set the photo camera flash manually

Jun 1, 2005 - © Karin Rex

A Little Forethought Goes a Long Way

By thinking ahead and learning to recognize instances where flash problems can occur, you can prevent most of them. For example, if you are too close to a subject in a low light situation, the shot will almost always be overexposed. Moving away from the subject and using the zoom to frame the picture can help.

If you are too far away from a subject in a low light situation, the shot will almost always be underexposed. In these cases, move closer, or add more light (for example by using an external auxiliary flash).

Be sure to take the time to experiment with your camera's flash modes so that you are prepared when "under the gun."
