Finally, using short strokes, "paint" over the pimple using the Clone Stamp tool. No more zit!

Using Paint Shop Pro

In Paint Shop Pro, select the Clone Brush. On the Tool Options bar (the second bar under the Menu bar), choose a brush from the Presets dropdown list. The brush should be slightly smaller than the blemish you will be fixing, and the Hardness should be set to no more than 50.

Next, hold down the Shift key and click the mouse pointer directly on the area of clear skin you identified earlier as matching in tone and color as the area where the blemish is. (It should be close to the blemish so you can see both areas while editing.) The Shift+Click action identifies that area of skin as the one you will be cloning.

Finally, using short strokes, "paint" over the pimple using the Clone tool. No more zit!

TIP: Scratch Remover Tool

Paint Shop Pro also has another tool that can sometimes be used to remove small blemishes from a photograph: the Scratch Remover tool. The Scratch Remover tool uses background image details to simulate new information to replace the scratch. If the background skin is relatively smooth, the result is usually satisfying, but if the background skin is more textured, the Clone Brush will be the better choice.

To try out the Scratch Remover tool, first open a copy of the picture you wish to edit and then zoom to at least 100%. Select the Scratch Remover tool (it may be "hidden" under the Clone Brush) and adjust the brush size in the Tools Options bar.

Choose a width that is about 3 or 4 pixels wider than the blemish you are trying to fix. (If the width is much larger than the blemish, you will end up losing image detail.) You may have to experiment with regard to which selection brush will work best for your image. Usually, the flat-end selection brush is used to correct blemishes (or scratches) that are perpendicular to object edges in the image or are in an open area (the background is similar and has no objects in it). The pointed-end selection brush is used to correct blemishes (or scratches) that are at an angle to object edges in the image (with this option, you can place the tool closer to the edges).

Next, position the cursor just outside one end of the scratch, then click and drag the bounding box over the blemish. When you release the mouse pointer, the blemish will be fixed. If you don't like the result and want to try again, just choose Undo from the Edit menu.
