Fixing Red Eyed Demon Relatives - Eliminate Red Eyes with Adobe Photoshop - Page 2© Karin Rex
I position my cursor (looks like a circle with a plus sign in the middle of it) over one eye, being certain to place the plus sign directly on a red area. I do this because, by default, Photoshop Elements will define the first color I click on as the color I want to change. (By the way, this feature is controlled by the Sampling dropdown menu on the right side of the Options Bar. The default is First Click. Changing this setting to Current Color would allow me to define a different color as the one I want to replace, which I don't need to do in most cases.) Once I have positioned my cursor correctly, I click on one red eye and then the other.
Time to start over. So I close the edited photograph without saving it and reopen the original photograph with the red eyes. Once again, I zoom in on the eyes, click on the Red Eye Brush Tool and double-check my Options Bar settings. Since I have not manually changed anything, the settings should all still be at the default for this tool, but being the slightly obsessive person that I am, I use the Reset Tool command again, just in case. Changing the Replacement Color My problem the last time was that the default Replacement color rendered my cousin's blue eyes dark gray. To better match Bjorn's true eye color I need to manually adjust the Replacement color to be blue. On the Options Bar, I click on the small swatch of color in the box to the right of the word Replacement:. This opens Photoshop Element's Color Picker. In the Color Slider (the long skinny bar containing a spectrum of color), I click on a medium blue. In the Color Field (the large area of color on the left side of this dialog box), I click on a blue that reminds me of my cousin's eyes, and then on the OK button. The Replacement color swatch on the Options Bar now displays the blue I chose. Once again, I position my cursor over the reddest part of an eye and then click to replace the red with the blue. Success! My cousin no longer looks like a demon and his eyes are as blue as the sparkling Rombaks Fjord on a sunny day.
