Taking good photographs is one part of the equation in digital photography. Editing those images is the second, and sometimes the most important, depending on the circumstances. Whether you simply need to resize your image to make them email-able (some email programs limit attachment file size), or you want to crop out extraneous bits, you'll find yourself needing to work on your photos at some point. Picking the right program to help you with this can be tricky, but thankfully most editing software is similar in its basic tools. There are a host of editing programs on the market at present, all of which I will not go into here. The Microsoft Windows operating system (if you use a PC) has its own basic editor, but I strongly suggest you buy something more versatile than Paint (for Windows users). Many image editing programs offer free 30-day trials, so you really can try-before-you-buy.

Once you've picked your program, you have the choice of experimenting with it on your own, reading through its tutorials if it has any, or buying a book to help walk you through using all its bells and whistles. I prefer the book method personally, and so do a large majority of today's photographers and image designers (if Amazon's books sales in this category can be any indication).

Recently, I had the privilege of interviewing professional graphic artist, illustrator, and author, Steve Caplin. A pioneer in photomontages and the like, his work has been featured in such publications as The Guardian, The Daily Telegraph, Radio Times, Men's Health, .net, PC Format, and many others. He's also a regular contributing editor for Mac User.

What follows is a transcript of our discussion:

My first job when I left university was playing the piano in a wine bar. The manager left to start a local listings magazine, and I started it with him; I spent the next 10 years editing and publishing magazines. In 1987 I launched a satirical magazine called The Truth, which won a couple of awards - one of which included, as a prize, a video camera and image digitizing board. I started playing around in Image Studio, an ancient precursor to Photoshop, and when I closed the magazine down two years later developed this side of my work. I had
