It's Y2K All Over AgainDoes this mean cyber-attacks never involve the loss of life? To assert this would be irresponsible. One lesson learned from the Millennium bug (a.k.a. Y2K) is just how critical computers are to our modern society. And research has shown if proper precautions were not taken to ensure all our critical systems had fail safe contingency plans in place the results could be disastrous should they malfunction. Fortunately, substantial time, effort and money were spent ensuring that should the Y2K bug bite we would be prepared. The same computer systems that were deemed mission critical in preparation for the new millennium (which I purposely will not enumerate here), today find themselves potential targets for a cyber-attack. So now, more than ever before, it is imperative that those "Y2K contingency plans" which have been collecting dust ever since New Year's Day 2000 be put back into service. As far as information security goes it's Y2K all over again only this time we don't know when it will hit.
