I've nibbled on an occasional Power Bar, or gulped
down a glass of the
latest and greatest energy drink. But I tend to be the
three-meals-a-day-no-snacks type of eater.
Then I went on a looong bike road -- and almost bonked. I mentioned this lack of energy to a friend. "You gotta try one of these," she said, opening her backpack and revealing a treasure chest of different types of energy bars. I sampled one then and another later, and voila! Bye-bye bonking. Since that experience, I've asked some friends for their recommendations for energy bars, and tried a few different types. The results: Clif Bars (available from http://www.clifbar.com/ )rated high on everyone's list. Some of my female friends particularly appreciated the new Luna bars, formulated especially for a woman's needs (for example, a healthy dose of calcium is packed into this tasty bar). And my mountain-biking buddies raved about the Clif SHOT, which is an energy gel that's "easy to gulp down, and it really works on those long rides!" praised my friend Kim. My workout pals and I also sampled the energy bars below, available from http://www.nutripeak.com/ . Nutripeak.com is one of the hottest new sites for sports nutrition. Low prices, the amazing variety of products, sports-related articles, and special features such as customized kits for different fitness and health goals make this site a winner. My weight-lifting friend Alex insists that the Best of Breed Bar is Lean Body. "That chocolate flavor is mighty tasty!" he said after he'd enthusiastically consumed the energy bar. "And check out the label - it's a better source of protein than the other kinds I've been eating, and it has less sugar too!" Several of my buddies are attempting to follow high protein diets. They gratefully grabbed for the Atkins Diet Advantage bars. The peanut butter flavor was rated the highest by all the munchers, who were happy to see that the low carbohydrate count and high protein in the energy bar made it perfect for their sometimes-hard-to-follow-on-the-run high protein diets. And last but not least, I thought the MET-Rx Krunch bar was a great choice for those of us who don't burn enough calories to need a super-dose of calories -- but crave a healthy, low-calorie snack after working out. I ate one of the 110-calorie white chocolate raspberry bars after a "spinning" class, and the crispy rice, fruity-chocolate flavor, and pleasant texture fully satisfied my snack needs. Go To Page: 1
