Nutritional Needs for Different Ages and Stages

It's easy to toss off phrases such as "Milk is good for every body" and "eat five or more servings a day of fresh fruits and vegetables." But when you have special nutritional needs, such adages may not apply.

Babies, such as my nephew, Zach certainly can't consume five or more servings of fresh fruits and vegetables! Mommy's milk is more his cuppa tea (skip the tea; heavy on the milk, please!). Zach specializes in sleeping, slumbering, and, occasionally, gurgling to please those adults -- and he'd be mighty sick if his parents didn't know the basics of baby nutrition. An excellent site for parents with babies such as Zach is http://www.parentsplace.com/ , where information about babies, toddlers, and other children is easily found.

But it's not just children who have special needs. Senior citizens, for example, may have difficulties chewing certain foods if they wear dentures or have problems digesting certain foods. Individuals with digestive disorders may be unable to consume some foods, increasing the danger of malnutrition.

In this world of the Web, fortunately for such individuals, there are numerous helpful resources.

Let's start with a basic: what is malnutrition? A useful article awaits you at this article that covers the causes and effects of malnutrition: http://www.odc.com/anthro/tutorial/tunit...

And now let's go to the experts. The American Dietetic Association (ADA) has a section on nutrition that includes links for children's nutrition, women's nutrition, and older people: http://www.eatright.org/nuresources.html

An excellent examination of the importance of eating defensively for those with AIDS, HIV and other high-risk groups can be found at the Eating Defensively section of the HIV/AIDS Treatment Information Service Web page: http://www.hivatis.org/!eatdef.html

And last but not least, you'll find information on digestive disorders ( http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/etext/00007... ), nutrition for the elderly, and children's nutrition ( http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/etext/00000... ) at the USDA's Index of Food and Nutrition Internet Resources ( http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/etext/fnic.... ).
