And They Call It Puppy Love...

My elderly neighbor, Pamela, is the loving owner of two toy poodles, Flopsy and Mopsy.

"My babies deserve the best," she says, giving them pieces of buttered toast and bites of apple pie. "Have you seen the ingredients on dog food? Yuck! I wouldn't feed that to my best friend, let alone my beloved babies."

Flopsy and Mopsy dine on cut-up lamb chops ("They like them medium rare," notes Pamela), mashed potatoes ("They love them mashed with lots of butter and just a dash of garlic salt," my friend reports), and liberal tastes of whatever Pamela is eating.

Unfortunately, these two dear little doggies are also extremely obese, and have a variety of health problems. When, at Pamela's request, I accompanied her to the vet's office, he lectured her about their diet.

"You love them too much," he said gently but firmly. "Don't you want them to be healthy?"

Reluctantly, Pamela agreed - and Flopsy and Mopsy look much trimmer.

Such situations, according to veterinarians, are common. We adore our pets, and we want them to be happy. But feeding chocolate to a dog can be deadly - and raising a cat on "people tuna" can cause a variety of health problems.

Talk to your veterinarian about what foods to feed your best buddy. If she or he recommends a particular manufacturer, check out the Web site. You can often find helpful nutritional information there.

For example, my vet suggested Hill's products. A trip to their online resources uncovered topics ranging from special nutritional needs for pets (http://www.hillspet.com/public/nutrition... to a collection of documents analyzing common health problems in cats and dogs and how to avoid them (http://www.hillspet.com/public/nutrition...

And now, good health to you and your furry friends!
