Book Review - Fit To Die - Part One"Fit To Die" edited by Joan Boswell and Sue Pike contains short stories and poems of crime fiction. The settings of these stories and poems all relate to physical fitness, sports, games, etc. I read a couple of short stories and a poem that I will be sharing in this article. The first story I read is titled "Fit To Live" by Audrey Jessup. The viewpoint is told in first person narration, who was Eileen. The setting is at Sunset Lodge Seniors' Residence. The main characters in the story were the narrator, Louise, Merrilee, Nora, and Mrs. Yee, the tai chi instructor at the lodge. Eileen, Louise, Merrilee, and Nora were all involved in tai chi. Nora and Merrilee weren't that interested in participating in the exercises. However, they ended up doing them. Throughout the story, I had some trouble following it. I wasn't sure about the Pavilions and why they were named the way they were: Sunset, Twilight, and Goodnight. Pavilion A was where the senior citizens stayed who were able to take care of themselves and have their own apartments. Pavilion B and C weren't explained so readers could tell what they were. I enjoyed the story, but it takes more than one reading to catch everything that was happening in the plot. Something happened in the end. One of the characters fell down the stairs, or was she pushed, or stabbed? You'll have to read the story to find out the answer. Another short story I read was titled "Race" by Vicki Cameron. This was an interesting story, but a little confusing. It was about a car race and changing tires. This was also told in first person narration. The main characters were Michael Calendri, Jerry, Ray, and Kurt. The plot was mainly about a car race and the pit stops the cars have to make and how fast the men can change the tires to get the drivers going again. However, something happened during the car race. Now, you'll have to read the story to find out what happened? One of the poems I read was titled "Writer's Cramp" by Joy Hewitt Mann. This was an interesting poem. Most poetry I have had trouble understanding. I haven't had that much of a desire to read them. However, this one was interesting. It is about a writer who was wanting to write a poem about killing people and motives. He wanted to stress the fact that people want to exercise so they can be fit. But, can people exercise too much? Will they exercise so much that they die? You'll have to read the poem to find out the conclusion.
