"The Best of the Sisters in Crime" - Part TwoIn my last article I did a review of two short stories that were from the book, The Best of the Sisters in Crime by Marilyn Wallace. This week I read two other short stories. They are "The Poison That Leaves No Trace" by Sue Grafton and "Lieutenant Harald and the Impossible Gun" by Margaret Maron. In "The Poison That Leaves No Trace" by Sue Grafton, the main detective is Kinsey Millhone. She is to investigate a murder. In the beginning of the story, I was confused because I wasn't sure who was talking. The characters were also a little confusing. The end of the story also left me uncertain as to what the author was trying to convey to her readers. In "Lieutenant Harald and the Impossible Gun," the main detective is Lieutenant Harald. He is to investigate a murder case. A man and his wife were arguing. He was also abusive to her. When the man was murdered, everyone thought that his wife killed him in self-defense. A kindergarten class was also involved in the story. They were studying "Community Helpers." Their teacher took them to various places to see how people help in the community. One place they visited was the police station. During their visit, some of the children took various items they saw such as note pads, etc. They were also fingerprinted. The Lieutenant told them what happens to criminals after they are fingerprinted. Immediately all of the children started emptying their pockets. They didn't want to go to jail. One child hadn't taken anything, but Lieutenant Harald had suspected him of being involved in the murder. This story was a little easier to understand than the first one. However, I enjoyed both of the stories and have enjoyed reading the book. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading Detective Fiction by women authors.
