Anna Pigeon is the detective who appears in Nevada Barr's books. "Track of the Cat" by Nevada Barr is an excellent book. Anna's husband was killed by a hit and run driver. She became depressed, but she decided to move away from the city to the Southwestern wilderness. She became a National Park Ranger. Sheila Drury, another Park Ranger, was killed. It was assumed that she was killed by a mountain lion. However, Anna believes she was murdered. During her investigation, she is almost killed when she falls off a cliff, but she survives. She becomes mores convinced that somebody killed Sheila and is after her. Now, you'll have to read the rest of the book to find out who killed Sheila.
Besides being a book for entertainment, Nevada Barr discusses different themes throughout this book. Her first theme is loneliness. Anna is lonely because her husband was killed by a hit and run driver. She also brings out that women who are alone would live the longest. Anna also drinks beer because she hopes her problems would disappear. When people are lonely, they do try to find ways to escape their problems.
Another theme is people's motives for committing crimes. Throughout the book, Nevada Barr discusses the motives such as greed or hate that different people might have for killing someone. Nevada Barr also brings out that people who commit crimes must live lonely lives. She also mentions that the world was designed for people who didn't have any secrets or nothing to hide. When people commit crimes, they are alone and want to hide or run away from people so they won't get caught.
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a great detective book. Nevada Barr did an excellent job in writing this book. It is easy to read and understand. There are twenty-one chapters and 291 pages. I also like the way that she has Anna ponders over the list of suspects and their motives. This is mentioned in the book so that readers can see what she is thinking and help her to solve the case.
At the end of the book, she gives a few pages of the next book in the series. Her other books in the series include:"A Superior Death," Ill Wind," "Firestorm," "Endangered Species," "Blind Descent," and Liberty Falling."
