Susie and Timmy, Junior Detectives in The Surprise

Susie stood by the kitchen door and listened to her parents' conversation. She heard her mother ask, "When are you leaving?"

"After breakfast," she heard her father say.

"Are you sure we're doing the right thing?"

"Yes."

Susie thought, Dad's leaving! Why? What's going on? With tears in her eyes, she thought again, What do I do now? I'll miss him. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe it's not true. Susie became startled when Timmy came up behind her. "Timmy, come upstairs with me."

"Why?"

"I need to talk to you."

"Okay."

When they entered their bedroom, Susie said, "I think Dad is going to leave us."

"What do you mean?"

"I think he is moving out."

"What? Are you crazy?"

"I heard Mom ask him if he was sure they were doing the right thing."

"Maybe they were talking about something else."

"Let's play detectives and search for clues."

"Great idea. Let's go after breakfast."

"Okay."

Susie and Timmy went downstairs to eat breakfast.

"Susie, is something wrong? You seem quiet today," her mother asked.

Startled, Susie thought, What should I say?

"Susie?"

"I'm all right," Susie blurted out. "Timmy and I have to go to school."

Susie and Timmy walked out the door.

"Let's hurry and get our bikes."

They parked their bikes in the bushes at the end of the driveway and waited until they saw their father coming. They followed him to the highway.

"This isn't how he goes to work. He's going to the turnpike," Susie said.

"You're right. Maybe he has to work out of town."

"I don't think so. Why is he leaving us? Why didn't he tell us goodbye?" Susie asked.

"I don't know what happened? I thought they loved each other," Timmy said.

"Maybe they're going to tell us tonight."

After school, Susie and Timmy went upstairs to their room to talk.

"Timmy, I have an idea. Let's look in Mom and Dad's room to see if he packed up his clothes."

"Great idea."

Susie and Timmy carefully entered their parents' room and looked around. They saw that all of their dad's clothes were still in the closet and chest.

"This is weird. If he was going to leave us, why didn't he take his things with him?" Susie asked.

"Maybe he isn't leaving, yet."

"That's possible," Susie agreed.

"Maybe they will tell us tonight."

"I just don't understand what they were talking about this morning if Dad isn't leaving us. Maybe there are other clues we can find."
