The Neighborhood Spy

Marie was sitting in her recliner writing her book when the phone rang. "Hello," Marie said. "Marie, this is Bea. Do you know anything about the two men who moved in west of you?" "No. I'm too busy working on my book to notice anything going on in the neighborhood." "There are two men who have beards and long hair. They look rugged. I'm concerned about the neighborhood and what they might do. I sure hope they aren't criminals." "I'm sure everything is all right." "I'll let you know if I find out anything." "I'm sure you will," Marie replied. "Who was that?" Mike asked Marie. "Our 'Neighborhood Spy,' " Marie replied. "What did she want?" "Just to tell me about the two men who moved in next door." "She sure is curious about the neighborhood. I wonder why?" "Maybe she's hiding something valuable and doesn't want it stolen, or maybe she's done something wrong and is watching out for policemen." "Could be. You never know what she's up to," Mike replied. "Maybe I'll take a walk and see if I can find out anything." Mike left the house and walked casually past the neighbor's house. He glanced on both sides of the street as he walked. When he returned, he told Marie that he didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. The phone rang again just as Marie and Mike were about to relax on the sofa. "Hello," Marie said. "I saw your husband walking in front of the house. Did he notice anything?" "Bea, if you're so curious why don't you go find out for yourself?" "I will." "That was the spy again," Marie said when she hung up. "I figured. I think I'll call Detective Mallory and let him know what's going on." Mike called Detective Mallory, but he wasn't at the station. After Mike hung up, the doorbell rang. "Mallory! I just tried to call you." "You did? What's wrong?" "I wanted to let you know what's happening in the neighborhood." "I already know, but how did you find out." "Our 'Neighborhood Spy' keeps calling us." "What has she told you?" Detective Mallory asked. "That two suspicious-looking men moved in next door," Mike replied. "She wondered who they were. She seemed afraid of them and thought they might be crooks." "They aren't crooks, I can assure you," Detective Mallory replied. "Who are they?" "I want you to know since we are personal friends, but don't let anyone else know."
