Where's Cindy? When Kim and Steve arrived at the adoption agency, they filled out the application and had an interview with Miss Roberts and Miss Johnson. During the interview, Miss Roberts said, "Earlier today I asked you if you were interested in adopting an older child." "Yes. We'd like to adopt any age." "We have a six-year-old girl named Cindy who is staying with a foster family. I will call them and set up a time for you to meet with them." "That would be great." As Miss Johnson dialed the number, she added, "They'll probably want you to meet them at Rose Park so you can observe Cindy playing. They don't want her to know you are interested in adopting a child." Miss Johnson hung up and said, "They will meet you at the park, if that's all right?" "That's fine." After the interview, they drove to the park. When they arrived, they were greeted by a middle-aged woman. "You must be Kim and Steve Hill." "Yes." "I'm Ruth Jones and this is my husband, Tony. Cindy is the little girl on the swing. They saw a blond-haired girl wearing blue shorts and a white shirt. Shortly, they saw Cindy get off the swing and run towards them. "Cindy, this is Mr. and Mrs. Hill," her foster mother said. "Hi," Cindy replied. "How are you?" "We're fine," Kim replied. "How about you?" "I'm all right. Ruth and Tony are my foster parents. Do you have any children here?" "No. We just like coming to the park and watching children play," Kim replied. "Do you want any children?" Cindy asked. "Yes, we do," Steve replied. "I like you both of you." "Thank you," Kim replied. "Cindy, you can go play while Tony and I visit with Mr. and Mrs. Hill." "Okay," Cindy replied, as she turned to face the swingset. She played on the swings for awhile and then went to the sandpile. "I think Cindy is a nice, well-mannered child." "We'd like to adopt her," Steve said. "That's great. Just fill out these papers and you can pick her up Friday at our house. Here's the address." After they arrived at their house, Kim heard the phone ringing. "Hello." She heard the voice on the other end say, "Mrs. Hill, this is Miss Roberts. I called to let you know that Cindy has run away. Have you seen her?" "No! Where could she be?"
