If you guessed that Steven's brother, Stanley, committed the robbery and shooting, you are right. Here is how Detective Mallory knew Stanley committed the crime.
Detective Mallory knew that Stanley Brooks shot Steven because of the following clues. First, the robber knew about the silent alarm. Steven and Stanley were the only ones who knew about the alarm. Second, he tried to blame Tom Jacobs. He told Detective Mallory that Tom was jealous of Steven because he was having a run of bad luck and Steven was successful. This was true about Stanley. Detective Mallory knew Tom personally and knew that he was doing all right financially. The final thing that Stanley mentioned was the robbery. Detective Mallory didn't say anything about a robbery. Stanley gave himself away.
