The Haunted HouseWhen their father stopped in front of their new house, Susie and Timmy spilled out of the car. "Don't go too far," he ordered. "We won't," they replied. Susie ran behind the house, her brown hair blowing in the wind. "Wait for me, Susie!" Timmy hollered. A chain link fence enclosed the back yard where there was a swing set, sandpile, and a play house. Timmy walked over to the fence and spotted a duck pond near the wooded area. "Susie! Baby ducks!" Susie ran up to Timmy and saw six white ducks splashing in the water. When they heard a bird singing in a tree, they looked up and saw a red bird fly into the woods. As they started trudging through the woods after it, they kept brushing the branches from their faces. They became distracted when they spotted a house in the distance. As they came closer, they noticed the house needed some paint. They also noticed broken windows. "Timmy, does anyone live here?" "It looks deserted." "This would be a great hideout." "Maybe we can set up our Junior Detective Agency here," Timmy suggested. Susie looked through a dusty window and saw white sheets over the furniture. She opened the door and walked inside. "Yuck," she cried, brushing cobwebs from her face. "It's dirty in here." "Shh. Somebody might be here." As they entered the kitchen, Susie noticed some boxes on the counter. "There's food in these boxes." "Listen." "What's that?" Susie clung to Timmy. "Music," Timmy replied. Someone called out, "Whooo's there?" Trying to dash out the front door, Susie and Timmy almost knocked each other down. They ran and hid behind some bushes. When they calmed down, Susie whispered, "Is this house haunted?" "I don't know, but I just thought of something." "What?" Susie asked. "We're supposed to be Junior Detectives. Let's check this place out and see who's in there." "Are you sure?" "Yes. We can handle it." "Okay. I'm with you. Being a Junior Detective can be scary at times." "Oh Susie. We'll be all right." Susie and Timmy sneaked inside the house to search for clues. They saw some chips on the kitchen counter as well as a few canned goods. Then, Susie spotted something on the kitchen table. "Look! This is Sara's appointment book." "What's it doing here?" Timmy asked curiously. "Maybe this is where Sara is staying," Susie replied.
