Rubies Are ForeverMaria Brooks, a slender woman with long, wavy blonde hair and sparkling blue eyes, stood in front of her bedroom mirror and brushed her hair the usual fifty times. "Calvin, I'll have breakfast ready pretty soon." "All right," Calvin replied, grumpily. Maria became startled by the sound of his voice. She didn't understand why he was so grumpy. However, she knew he had come home after she had gone to bed, but she didn't know what time. She thought he might have had to work late at the station. Calvin was a policeman at River City Police Station. Maria stood in front of the stove fixing bacon, eggs, and toast when Calvin entered the room. Instead of his usual greeting to Maria, which was giving her a hug and saying "Good Morning" to her, he sat down without a word. Maria placed the food on the table and Calvin began eating. "Calvin, is something wrong?" "No," he grumbled. "Are you sure? You seem tired or upset about something." Calvin ignored her and kept eating his breakfast. When he finished, he started to leave for work. "Will you be home for supper tonight?" "I don't know." He turned and walked out the kitchen door which led to the garage. When Calvin left, Maria entered the living room and stared out the front window watching Calvin leave. She knew something was wrong with him because he seemed to be preoccupied about something. She decided to confront Calvin tonight. Later that night, Maria looked at the clock on the fireplace mantle and saw that it was about time for Calvin to come home for supper. After Maria fixed supper, Calvin still wasn't home. "Where is he? He should be home by now." Maria started pacing the floor. Finally, she decided to eat. When she finished eating and put the food away, she decided to call Katie, her close friend. "Katie, I don't know what to do. Calvin has been coming home late." "Maybe he's seeing someone else?" "No. He loves me. The day he proposed, he gave me a ruby necklace and said it would be a sign of our love which would be forever." "Have you thought about calling a private detective to have him followed?" "Why should I?" "It's just a thought. If something is wrong with Calvin, a private detective might help you." "I'll think about it." When Katie left, Maria put on her blue silk nightgown and went to bed. She tossed and turned until she finally fell asleep.
