If the writer uses difficult words, then you might have trouble understanding what you are reading. You will have to keep looking up the words. As a result, you want to give up and find an easier book to read. When you pick up a good book, you probably want to settle back in your easy chair or in your bed and read. If you have a book that is easy to read and understand, then you will become more involved in the plot and can relate to the characters and what they are experiencing. Identifying with certain characters makes the book more enjoyable. As a result, you will benefit from your reading. When you have gained something from your reading, you will want to develop a habit of reading regularly. Otherwise, you may give up and not want to read. Detective fiction is an exciting genre. When you are reading a detective fiction book, you may be caught up in the plot and find yourself searching for clues right along with the detective. These clues can be hidden or revealed. Writers also may plant false clues, which are known as red herrings, to throw readers off guard. As you read, you may want to take notes to see how writers plant their clues. It will also help you solve the case. Who knows, maybe you will figure out the villain before you finish reading. Taking notes, as I just mentioned, is one way to help you comprehend what you are reading. For example, you can make a list of all the characters, a description of them, and what they do. This will help you to know who is involved in the story, and you can keep track of each character. After that, you can list the crime or crimes that have been committed and the clues you have found. By listing these things, you will comprehend more from your reading. Searching for clues involves more that finding the hints that writers plant in their stories. It involves helping you to search for the different elements such as characters, themes, plot structure, clues, etc. so you will develop a better understanding of the material.
