What is Detective Fiction?

Detective Fiction stories and books involve a main character who is a private detective. He or she is hired to solve crimes such as murder, kidnapping, burglary, etc.

The private detectives first investigate their cases by gathering information from the victim or victims. After they gather the information, they go around the neighborhood to see if any of the neighbors may know something about the crime that was committed. When the private detectives have gathered enough information, they search for their suspects. Once the suspects are located, they are brought in for questioning. If the private detectives have enough information, the suspect or suspects are arrested.

Agatha Christie has some private detectives who solve cases in the stories that she writes. Hercule Poirot and Miss Jane Marple are two of her detectives. Agatha Christie's book, The Harlequin Teaset and Other Stories, is a great book that was published in 1997. Hercule Poirot is the detective who is solving the case of "The Mystery of the Spanish Chest," one of the stories in the book. Agatha Christie also has another private detective named Mr. Harley Quin. He is involved in "The Harlequin Tea Set," which is also in the book. Agatha Christie's book is featured on the Putnam Berkley Wide World Web site at http://www.putnam.com/putnam

Raymond Chandler is another writer who uses a private detective to solve cases. He features the well-known Philip Marlowe. Some of Raymond Chandler's works are The Big Sleep, Farewell, My Lovely, and The High Window. He has also written several pulp stories. Pulp Fiction Central has the Hard-Boiled Detective Fiction. Some of Raymond Chandler's works are listed there. They also have other authors like Dashiell Hammett, Talmage Powell, Carroll John Daly, and Hugh B. Cave.

Two other sites that are great for finding Detective fiction stories are Thrilling Detective Website and The Mysterious Home Page.

Reading Detective fiction stories are exciting and full of suspense. Every time I read a Detective fiction story, I want to see if I can solve the case right along with the detective. When I read, I see what clues I can find that will help me solve the case. Sometimes, I can figure things out when I read the stories. I also enjoy watching Detective shows on television or at the movies. Life is exciting with a good Detective fiction book.
